The Australian Flag was ‘born’ in 1901 following Federation. It consists of 3 main elements - the Union Jack (denoting the country’s British heritage), the Southern Cross (the 5 stars of the Southern Hemisphere’s most significant navigational constellation) and the Commonwealth Star (7 pointed star symbolizing 6 states (NSW, QLD, TAS, VIC, WA, SA, NT, ACT) and combined territories).
